Door-panel sizing

Magnetic signs sized to fit your truck door, not a generic template.

A sign that is too big overlaps the door seam and window trim. Too small, and it looks like an afterthought. We size every pair to sit cleanly inside the flat panel of your specific truck door โ€” pickup, cargo van, or dually.

Measuring Your Door Panel

Truck doors are not all the same shape. Most have a flat, workable area bordered by a body crease, the window frame, and the door handle. Before ordering, measure the widest flat rectangle you can fit inside those borders โ€” that is your usable sign area, not the full outer dimension of the door.

  1. Measure the flat area width โ€” side to side, staying inside any body crease.
  2. Measure the flat area height โ€” top to bottom, staying clear of the window frame and handle.
  3. Round down slightly. A sign with a half-inch of margin on every side looks intentional; a sign that touches the door edges looks stretched.
  4. Test the surface with a fridge magnet first. If it does not stick, the panel is aluminium or fibreglass โ€” see the note below.

Why Door Placement Beats Other Panels

Doors are the highest-visibility flat surface on a truck โ€” visible from the side at intersections, in parking lots, and to anyone walking past the vehicle. They also open and close constantly, which is exactly why a magnetic sign belongs there instead of glued vinyl: pulling a sign off before a car wash or a personal errand takes seconds, and there is no risk of catching the edge on a door hinge the way a poorly cut vinyl edge can.

Steel vs. Aluminium Doors

Magnetic signs hold only on steel body panels. Several common trucks and vans have aluminium doors, where a magnet will not grip at all:

  • Ford F-150 (2015+): aluminium doors and hood โ€” magnets will not hold on the front doors.
  • Honda Ridgeline: aluminium body panels throughout.
  • Some heavy-duty trims: check with a fridge magnet โ€” panel material varies by trim level.

If your door panels are aluminium, magnetic signs are not an option for that surface โ€” permanent vinyl door lettering is the correct product instead.

Installing a Magnetic Sign on a Door

  1. Clean the door panel with soap and water, then dry it fully. Dust and road film under the magnet cause premature wear on both the sign and the paint.
  2. Line the sign up parallel to the body crease or door edge โ€” a sign installed slightly crooked is the most common complaint we hear, and it is avoidable by eyeballing against a straight line on the vehicle.
  3. Press from the centre outward to remove air pockets, working toward each edge.
  4. Check that no edge overlaps the door seam โ€” an overlapping edge catches wind at highway speed and lifts.

Door Sizing FAQ

What size magnetic sign fits a standard pickup door?

Most regular-cab pickups fit a 12" x 24" pair comfortably. Crew-cab trucks with a larger door panel usually fit an 18" x 24" pair better. Send your make and model if you are unsure.

Will the sign cover the door handle or window controls?

No โ€” we size signs to sit inside the flat panel area, clear of the handle, mirror mount, and window frame. If your door has an unusual shape, tell us in the order notes.

Can I put a magnetic sign on a van sliding door?

Yes, as long as the sliding door panel is steel (most cargo vans are). The flat rear-quarter panel next to the sliding door often works too if you need extra size.

How do I know if my door is steel or aluminium?

Hold a fridge magnet to the door. If it grips, a vehicle magnet will hold too. If it does not, the panel is aluminium, fibreglass, or plastic and magnets will not work there.
