What Is Truck Door Lettering?

Truck door lettering is vinyl text applied to the driver and passenger doors of a commercial vehicle. It typically includes your business name, phone number, website, and sometimes a tagline or licence number. In Ontario, door lettering is the most common form of commercial vehicle identification β€” it tells potential customers who you are and how to reach you, every time you drive, park, or idle at a job site.

Unlike a full wrap, door lettering is affordable, easy to install yourself, and replaceable when your phone number or branding changes. It is the single highest-ROI marketing investment a tradesperson or contractor can make. Your truck is already driving around your service area every day β€” lettering turns it into a mobile billboard that works while you work.

We cut all door lettering from outdoor-rated vinyl in our shop in Port Colborne, Ontario. Every order comes as a mirrored pair (driver + passenger) unless you specify otherwise. We send a digital proof before cutting, so you see exactly what you are getting before we touch the plotter.

Door Lettering Sizes by Truck Model

The most common mistake with DIY door lettering is getting the size wrong. A decal sized for a Ford F-150 will not look right on a Chevy Silverado 3500, and a Sprinter van has completely different door geometry than a RAM ProMaster. We size your lettering to fit your specific truck model β€” but here are general guidelines so you know what to expect.

Vehicle TypeTypical Door WidthRecommended Text HeightMax Lines
Half-Ton Pickup (F-150, Silverado 1500, RAM 1500)30"–36"3"–4" per line2–3
Heavy-Duty Pickup (F-250/350, Silverado 2500/3500)32"–38"3"–5" per line2–4
Cargo Van (Transit, ProMaster, Sprinter)40"–60" (sliding door)4"–6" per line3–5
Box Truck / Cube Van48"–72" (panel)4"–8" per line3–6
SUV (Expedition, Suburban, Tahoe)28"–34"2.5"–4" per line2–3

Not sure about your exact measurements? Tell us your year, make, model, and cab style in the design studio, and we will size the proof to fit. If you want to measure yourself, open both doors fully, measure the flat area between the door handle and the bottom edge of the window β€” that is your usable space.

The 35-Font Library

Most sign shops give you a choice of 5 or 6 fonts. We give you 35 β€” all commercial-use Google Fonts, organized into six categories. Every font has been tested for readability at door-lettering scale (3" to 6" height) from a distance of 5 to 30 metres. Here is what each category delivers:

  • Bold / Block (8 fonts) β€” Maximum impact. Bebas Neue, Black Ops One, Russo One. For contractors who want to be seen from across a parking lot.
  • Condensed / Industrial (6 fonts) β€” Fits more text in less space. Oswald, Barlow Condensed, Teko. For when you need company name, phone, website, and licence number on one door.
  • Modern / Futuristic (9 fonts) β€” Tech and sci-fi vibes. Audiowide, Orbitron, Exo 2. For tech companies, AV installers, and anyone who wants a sleek look.
  • Stencil / Military (3 fonts) β€” Rugged and authoritative. Saira Stencil One, Black Han Sans. For construction, demolition, and heavy equipment operators.
  • Display / Character (5 fonts) β€” Personality-first. Bangers, Permanent Marker, Metal Mania. For food trucks, mobile DJs, and anyone who wants to stand out.
  • Clean / Professional (4 fonts) β€” Corporate and legit. Kanit, IBM Plex Sans, Titillium Web. For professional services, real estate, and corporate fleets.

You can preview every font with your own text in the design studio. If you need a font we do not list, send us a screenshot and we will match it.

What to Put on Your Truck Doors

The goal of door lettering is to make someone driving behind you, parked beside you, or walking past your truck at a job site think β€œI need to call that guy.” Here is what works:

Line 1 β€” Your Business Name

This should be the largest text on the door β€” 4" to 6" tall depending on your truck size. Use a bold or condensed font. If your business name is long, a condensed font like Oswald or Barlow Condensed will fit without shrinking the text to an unreadable size.

Line 2 β€” What You Do

A one-line description of your service. β€œRoofing & Siding”, β€œPlumbing & Heating”, β€œLandscaping & Snow Removal”. This should be smaller than your name β€” 2" to 3" tall. People need to know what you do without squinting.

Line 3 β€” Phone Number

Your phone number is the call to action. Make it readable from 10 metres away β€” 3" tall minimum. Use a clean font, not a fancy one. Source Code Pro or IBM Plex Sans are excellent for phone numbers because every digit is equally spaced and unmistakable.

Optional β€” Website or Slogan

If you have space, add your website (without the β€œwww.”) or a short slogan. Keep it under 25 characters. This goes at the bottom in the smallest text β€” 1.5" to 2" tall. Do not crowd the door. White space is your friend.

Vinyl Material Options

We offer two material grades for door lettering. Both are cut from outdoor-rated vinyl on our plotter in Port Colborne:

  • Standard Vinyl β€” 5-year outdoor rated. Handles salt, UV, rain, car washes, and pressure washers. This is what 90% of our customers choose for door lettering. Matte or gloss finish depending on the colour.
  • Reflective Vinyl β€” High-visibility material that reflects headlights at night. Required for some commercial vehicles, but also a smart upgrade for anyone who parks on the street overnight. Your lettering is visible 24/7. 1.5x the cost of standard vinyl.

If your truck requires reflective lettering for regulatory reasons (CVOR vehicles, DOT-regulated trucks), visit our partner site ComplianceLettering.ca for regulation-specific kits that meet Transport Canada and MTO requirements.

We are not a sign shop charging $500+ for door lettering. We are not Amazon garbage that peels in 3 months. We are the middle ground β€” real outdoor-rated vinyl, cut here in Ontario, shipped with everything you need to install it yourself in 10 minutes.

How to Install Door Lettering

Every order ships with transfer tape pre-applied, a squeegee card, and printed step-by-step instructions. Most people finish both doors in under 15 minutes. Here is the process:

  1. Clean the door surface. Use isopropyl alcohol or a glass cleaner without ammonia. The surface needs to be completely free of wax, grease, and dust. Do not use Windex β€” the ammonia interferes with adhesion.
  2. Position the decal. Use masking tape to hinge the decal along the top edge. This lets you lift and reposition before committing. Step back 3 metres and check alignment with the door handle and window line.
  3. Peel the backing. With the hinge tape holding the top, peel the backing paper away from the bottom, folding it up and out of the way.
  4. Squeegee from centre out. Press the vinyl onto the surface starting from the centre, working outward in firm, overlapping strokes. This pushes air bubbles to the edges where they escape.
  5. Remove the transfer tape. Peel the transfer tape slowly at a sharp angle (180 degrees back on itself). If any letters lift, press them back down and rub with the squeegee before continuing.
  6. Repeat on the passenger side. Your order includes a mirrored pair, so the layout matches on both doors.

Regulation & Compliance

If you operate a commercial vehicle in Ontario, your door lettering may need to include specific information. CVOR-registered vehicles require the operator’s legal name and CVOR number displayed on both sides of the vehicle. DOT-regulated vehicles crossing into the United States require USDOT and MC numbers.

We do not sell regulation-specific lettering kits on this site. For CVOR numbers, DOT lettering, GVW markings, and Transport Canada compliance kits, visit ComplianceLettering.ca. They specialize in regulation-compliant lettering with exact sizing, materials, and placement guides that meet MTO and Transport Canada requirements.

What we do here is the branding side β€” your company name, phone number, slogan, and visual identity. Many customers order compliance lettering from ComplianceLettering.ca and branding lettering from us, then install both at the same time.

Before & After

We are building a gallery of real customer installations. If you have installed our door lettering on your truck, send us a photo at info@niagarastandsout.com and we will feature your truck here (with your permission). Customers who submit photos get 15% off their next order.

Service Area

We ship door lettering kits across Canada via Canada Post. Free shipping on orders over $75. Local pickup is available in Port Colborne, Ontario by appointment. Most orders ship within 1–2 business days and arrive within 2–5 business days depending on your location. Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and the GTA typically receive orders in 2–3 days.

Truck Door Lettering FAQ

How long does door lettering last?

Our standard vinyl is rated for 5+ years outdoors. It handles Canadian winters, salt, UV, car washes, and pressure washers. Reflective vinyl has the same durability rating with added nighttime visibility.

Do the letters come as one piece or individually?

Each line of text is pre-spaced and cut as one assembly on transfer tape. You apply the entire line at once β€” no need to space individual letters. This guarantees perfect alignment every time.

Can I get a single door instead of a pair?

Yes. Select "single door" in the quote form. Most customers order pairs, but we accommodate any configuration.

What if I spelled something wrong on the proof?

We send you a digital proof before cutting. If you catch a typo, we fix it and send a new proof at no charge. If we make the error, we re-cut free.

Will it damage my paint when I remove it?

No. Vinyl lettering removes cleanly with a heat gun or hair dryer. Warm the vinyl, peel slowly, then use adhesive remover for any residue. We have a blog post on the exact process.

Can I install it myself?

Yes. Every order ships with transfer tape, a squeegee card, and printed instructions. Most installations take 10-15 minutes for both doors. No special tools needed.

Do you offer installation?

We do not offer installation services. Our kits are designed for self-install. If you want professional installation, any local sign shop or detailer can apply pre-cut vinyl in 15 minutes.

What information should I include on my truck doors?

At minimum: business name and phone number. Ideally: business name, what you do, phone number, and website. Keep it readable from 10 metres away. Less is more β€” do not crowd the door.
