What Is Truck Door Lettering?

Truck door lettering is vinyl text applied to the driver and passenger doors of a commercial vehicle. It typically includes your business name, phone number, website, and sometimes a tagline or licence number. In Ontario, door lettering is the most common form of commercial vehicle identification — it tells potential customers who you are and how to reach you, every time you drive, park, or idle at a job site.

Unlike a full wrap, door lettering is affordable, easy to install yourself, and replaceable when your phone number or branding changes. It is the single highest-ROI marketing investment a tradesperson or contractor can make. Your truck is already driving around your service area every day — lettering turns it into a mobile billboard that works while you work.

Door Lettering Sizes by Truck Model

The most common mistake with DIY door lettering is getting the size wrong. A decal sized for a Ford F-150 will not look right on a Chevy Silverado 3500, and a Sprinter van has completely different door geometry than a RAM ProMaster. We size your lettering to fit your specific truck model — but here are general guidelines so you know what to expect.

If you want to measure yourself, open both doors fully, measure the flat area between the door handle and the bottom edge of the window — that is your usable space.

The 35-Font Library

Most sign shops give you a choice of 5 or 6 fonts. We give you 35 — all commercial-use Google Fonts, organized into six categories. Every font has been tested for readability at door-lettering scale (3" to 6" height) from a distance of 5 to 30 metres. Here is what each category delivers:

• Bold / Block (10 fonts) — Maximum impact. Bebas Neue, Black Ops One, Russo One. For contractors who want to be seen from across a parking lot.
• Condensed / Industrial (8 fonts) — Fits more text in less space. Oswald, Barlow Condensed, Teko. For when you need company name, phone, website, and licence number on one door.
• Modern / Futuristic (11 fonts) — Tech and sci-fi vibes. Audiowide, Orbitron, Exo 2. For tech companies, AV installers, and anyone who wants a sleek look.
• Stencil / Military (5 fonts) — Rugged and authoritative. Saira Stencil One, Black Han Sans. For construction, demolition, and heavy equipment operators.
• Display / Character (8 fonts) — Personality-first. Bangers, Permanent Marker, Metal Mania. For food trucks, mobile DJs, and anyone who wants to stand out.
• Clean / Professional (6 fonts) — Corporate and legit. Kanit, IBM Plex Sans, Titillium Web. For professional services, real estate, and corporate fleets.

What to Put on Your Truck Doors

The goal of door lettering is to make someone driving behind you, parked beside you, or walking past your truck at a job site think “I need to call that guy.” Here is what works:

Line 1 — Your Business Name

This should be the largest text on the door — 4" to 6" tall depending on your truck size. Use a bold or condensed font. If your business name is long, a condensed font like Oswald or Barlow Condensed will fit without shrinking the text to an unreadable size.

Line 2 — What You Do

A one-line description of your service. “Roofing & Siding”, “Plumbing & Heating”, “Landscaping & Snow Removal”. This should be smaller than your name — 2" to 3" tall. People need to know what you do without squinting.

Line 3 — Phone Number

Your phone number is the call to action. Make it readable from 10 metres away — 3" tall minimum. Use a clean font, not a fancy one. Source Code Pro or IBM Plex Sans are excellent for phone numbers because every digit is equally spaced and unmistakable.

Optional — Website or Slogan

If you have space, add your website (without the “www.”) or a short slogan. Keep it under 25 characters. This goes at the bottom in the smallest text — 1.5" to 2" tall. Do not crowd the door. White space is your friend.

Vinyl Material Options

We offer two material grades for door lettering. Both are cut from outdoor-rated vinyl on our plotter in Port Colborne:

• Standard Vinyl — 5-year outdoor rated. Handles salt, UV, rain, car washes, and pressure washers. This is what 90% of our customers choose for door lettering. Matte or gloss finish depending on the colour.
• Reflective Vinyl — An optional visibility finish that reflects light at night. This branding product does not determine or certify a legal marking requirement.

Ontario O. Reg. 424/97 requires the CVOR certificate to be carried in the vehicle; it does not impose a general CVOR door-display mandate. US-bound carriers may need legal-name and USDOT markings under 49 CFR 390.21. Visit ComplianceLettering.ca for regulation-specific identification.

The online kit is for measured, self-installed lettering with a proof before custom production. Full panels, wraps, complex contours and installation use the quote workflow.

How to Install Door Lettering

Every order ships with transfer tape pre-applied, a squeegee card, and printed step-by-step instructions. Work carefully and allow enough time to position each graphic correctly:

1. Clean the door surface. Use isopropyl alcohol or a glass cleaner without ammonia. The surface needs to be completely free of wax, grease, and dust. Do not use Windex — the ammonia interferes with adhesion.
2. Position the decal. Use masking tape to hinge the decal along the top edge. This lets you lift and reposition before committing. Step back 3 metres and check alignment with the door handle and window line.
3. Peel the backing. With the hinge tape holding the top, peel the backing paper away from the bottom, folding it up and out of the way.
4. Squeegee from centre out. Press the vinyl onto the surface starting from the centre, working outward in firm, overlapping strokes. This pushes air bubbles to the edges where they escape.
5. Remove the transfer tape. Peel the transfer tape slowly at a sharp angle (180 degrees back on itself). If any letters lift, press them back down and rub with the squeegee before continuing.
6. Repeat if you ordered a matching pair. Pair packages include one driver-side and one passenger-side graphic prepared to read correctly.
