What Is a Windshield Banner?
A windshield banner is a strip of vinyl text applied across the top of your windshield, typically spanning the full width above the tint line. They are the most visible decal on any truck β the first thing someone sees when your vehicle is coming toward them, parked facing outward, or sitting in a lineup at a truck meet. Windshield banners are popular with personal truck owners for displaying brand names, slogans, social handles, or crew names.
We cut every windshield banner from outdoor-rated vinyl in our shop in Port Colborne, Ontario. You choose the text, font, and colour in our design studio, and we send a digital proof before we cut. Every banner ships with transfer tape, a squeegee card, and step-by-step instructions for installation.
Windshield banners are one of the easiest vinyl products to install yourself. The flat glass surface is ideal for vinyl adhesion, and the horizontal format means you only need to align one axis. Most installs take under 10 minutes.

Open Design StudioThe AS-1 Line: What You Need to Know
The AS-1 line is the most important concept in windshield banner legality. It is a marking on your windshield β either a physical line etched into the glass or a designation in the DOT stamp β that indicates the area above which tint, stickers, and decals are permitted without obstructing the driverβs critical vision area.
How to Find Your AS-1 Line
Look at the bottom corner of your windshield near the DOT stamp. If your glass is marked βAS-1β, the entire windshield meets the highest optical clarity standard, and decals are permitted in the top strip. If it is marked βAS-2β or βAS-3β, the manufacturer may have a specific line etched higher.
As a general rule, the AS-1 zone is approximately the top 15 cm (6 inches) of the windshield. This is where your windshield banner goes. Installing a banner below this line could potentially interfere with your forward visibility and may attract attention during a vehicle inspection.
Provincial Guidelines
In Canada, windshield regulations vary by province. Here is a summary of the key rules for the provinces where most of our customers are:
| Province | Windshield Tint / Decal Rule | Permitted Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | No tint permitted on windshield below the AS-1 line. Decals in the top strip are generally tolerated. | Top 15 cm (6") |
| Quebec | No aftermarket tint on windshield. Strip decals in the top zone are tolerated for non-commercial vehicles. | Top 15 cm (6") |
| Alberta | Non-reflective material permitted above the AS-1 line. | Top 15 cm (6") |
| British Columbia | No aftermarket film below the top band. Decals permitted in the top strip area. | Top 75 mm (3") minimum |
| Manitoba | Non-reflective strip decals permitted in top zone. | Top 15 cm (6") |
| Saskatchewan | No aftermarket tint on windshield. Strip decals tolerated above sight line. | Top 15 cm (6") |
Important: These are general guidelines. Enforcement varies by officer and jurisdiction. We recommend keeping all windshield banners within the top 15 cm (6 inches) of the glass, using non-reflective vinyl, and ensuring the banner does not extend below the AS-1 zone. Design Your BannerWindshield Banner Sizes by Vehicle
Windshield curvature and width vary significantly between truck models. Here are recommended banner widths for the most popular vehicles:
| Vehicle | Windshield Width | Recommended Banner Width | Max Text Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 / F-250 / F-350 | ~58" | 36"β44" | 4"β5" |
| Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra | ~57" | 36"β44" | 4"β5" |
| RAM 1500 / 2500 / 3500 | ~59" | 36"β46" | 4"β5.5" |
| Toyota Tacoma / Tundra | ~54" | 34"β42" | 3.5"β4.5" |
| Jeep Wrangler / Gladiator | ~52" | 32"β40" | 3"β4" |
| Ford Ranger / Chevy Colorado | ~53" | 34"β40" | 3.5"β4.5" |
These are starting points. We adjust the exact width to the curve of your specific windshield based on the year, make, and model you provide. The banner should not extend to the very edges of the glass β you need 3β5 inches of clearance on each side so the flat vinyl does not fight the curvature at the corners.
Vinyl Material for Windshields
All our windshield banners are cut from outdoor-rated vinyl. For windshield applications, we recommend standard (non-reflective) vinyl:
- Standard Vinyl β 5-year outdoor rated. Does not interfere with visibility. Available in 12 colours. This is the correct choice for 99% of windshield banners.
- Reflective Vinyl β We offer this for door and body panel lettering, but we do not recommend reflective vinyl on windshields. It can create glare from oncoming headlights at night and may attract enforcement attention. If you specifically want reflective material on your windshield, we will cut it, but we will note the risk in your proof.
Font Showcase for Windshield Banners
Windshield banners are read at a distance and at speed. The font matters. Here are our top recommendations by style:
- Aggressive / Truck Meet: Bebas Neue, Black Ops One, Russo One β big, bold, reads like a movie title across your windshield.
- Clean / Professional: Oswald, Roboto Condensed, Kanit β sharp and modern without being flashy. Great for business branding.
- Motorsport / Racing: Saira Condensed, Antonio, Teko β condensed and sporty. F1 energy. Perfect for track trucks and overlanders.
- Show Truck / Custom: Bangers, Permanent Marker, Metal Mania β personality-first. Comic book impact, handwritten flair, or heavy metal attitude.
- Futuristic / Tech: Audiowide, Orbitron, Electrolize β sci-fi and cyberpunk vibes. Stands out at night meets.

How to Install a Windshield Banner
- Clean the windshield top strip. Use isopropyl alcohol. Do not use Windex (ammonia). The glass needs to be spotless, dry, and free of wax or rain repellent coating in the install zone.
- Dry fit the banner. Hold it up (without removing the backing) and centre it. Mark the edges with small pieces of masking tape so you know where it goes.
- Hinge method. Tape the top edge of the banner to the glass. Peel the bottom half of the backing away, then squeegee the vinyl onto the glass from centre outward.
- Remove remaining backing. Peel the rest of the backing and squeegee the upper portion down.
- Remove transfer tape. Wait 5 minutes, then peel the transfer tape slowly at a 180-degree angle.
- Press edges. Run the squeegee over the edges one more time for a permanent bond.
The full install typically takes 5β10 minutes. For a visual guide, read: How to Apply Vinyl Decals to Your Truck.
Design Ideas & Inspiration
Not sure what to put on your windshield? Here is what Canadian truck owners are ordering:
- Business branding: Company name in a bold font. Clean, professional, visible from far away. The most common order.
- Social handles: Your Instagram handle (@yourname) in a modern font. Popular with content creators, car clubs, and off-road builds.
- Crew names: Your truck club, off-road group, or build crew name. Stencil or military fonts work well for this.
- Slogans: Short, punchy phrases β βBUILT NOT BOUGHTβ, βWORK HARD PLAY HARDERβ, or your own custom text.
- Memorial / tribute: In memory of text, often in a clean serif or italic style. We handle these with care.
